The Grey Argyle Quilt

Patchwork quilt with geometric diamond pattern in various colors on a wooden floor.
  • 100% naturally dyed linen. Cotton sashiko thread.

  • This quilt was based on the traditional snowball block and inspired by the argyle pattern.

  • This coverlet was machine pieced and and hand stitched.

This quilt started as a variation of a snowball block but that seed of inspiration shifted as I designed the quilt. I loved realizing that this was becoming an argyle-ish pattern as the composition developed.

This quilt was inspired by the snowball block that I had been working with all year. I stretched the square into a diamond and then added white tips for the snowball element, but only to a few. I added sashing between the blocks that were interrupted for a woven effect. This technique was annoying to work with but I loved the effect so much.

This is a king size quilt (I don’t have the exact measurements.) that fully covers a king size bed with a 10 inch drop on three sides.

This quilt front and quilt back is 100% linen that is naturally dyed. Technically, this quilt is a coverlet because it does not include batting. It was all naturally dyed. The light grey is dyed from foraged acorns with an aftermath of iron and the dark grey is dyed with foraged black walnut with an aftermath of iron. The colored sashing is dyed from indigo, madder, foraged pinecones, cutch, and pomegranate. The black sashing was dyed with logwood, cutch, and an aftermath of iron. The back was grey dyed with black walnut with an aftermath of iron.

The binding is a mix of colors taken from the sashing colors. The stitching follows the seams on both sides of the sashing in ivory cotton sashiko style thread.
