The pandemic star quilt was the second quilt I made during 2020. It is a reflection on the friends who held me together during that time of isolation. A tribute to them. Some were my friends and some were my children’s friends. Both played a big part in the life of our family during that hard season.

I dyed each of these linen fabrics with natural dye. Each star represents a meditation on one friend. The colors chosen based on my subjective feelings towards these people and colors that came to mind as I considered who they were to me. It was a fun way to pass the time. During the pandemic I thought a lot about the people in my life. The ones who supported me, the ones I supported. What a season to show who made me feel comforted and loved. It shaped the way I have invested people since then.

This is another quilt design great for a beginner. The half-square triangle can be made in batches. The technique is fun to learn and is easier than it looks . For this design I chose an elephant grey background. Bright colors from madder, indigo, lac, clutch, indigo, tea, Himalayan rhubarb, wattle, logwood purple and osage orange light up the night sky of this quilt. the stars of offset in rows of 2 and 3 for a square piece with five columns. Because the fabric is all hand dyed, the grey background varies in tone.

The binding is a playful prairie point edging made of the extra colored pieces. The quilt is backed with linen and the batting is thin cotton layer. Hand stitched quilting in thick ivory sashiko thread.
